On April 17, 2010, the National Action Network hosted a forum, “Measuring the Movement,” a “12-month action plan for black leadership.” The conversation focused on “measurable action that federal, state and local governments and grassroots organizations can take to improve the quality of life for African-Americans.”
In an interview with TV One’s Roland Martin, the Rev. Al Sharpton outlined the goals of the national leadership forum.
The forum was broadcast live on TV One. The panelists included:
- Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), House Majority Whip
- Lezli Baskerville, President and CEO, National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO)
- Benjamin Jealous, President and CEO, NAACP
- Marc Morial, President and CEO, National Urban League
- Mayor Michael Nutter, City of Philadelphia
- Rep. Calvin Smyre, President, National Black Caucus of State Legislators
On his radio show, “Hour of Power,” Sharpton said the forum was a success, but noted:
The success will be when we implement what we outlined. It’s about action …The real challenge is the work.
What are we going to do? ...That is the measure of the success, or the lack of success, of the convention.
Sharpton added:
The time for talk is over. It’s time to walk the walk. Nobody cares when you’re upset. They care when you organize.
Host Tom Joyner said “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” staff will follow up with the organizations. Martin said "Washington Watch" will follow up with a "progress report on what's actually getting done every 90 days." The first report will be in July.
